The Sunday Island Market's first Booth of the month award goes to:

Green Hart

Green Hart is an environmental and social upliftment craft and arts organisation aiding the underprivileged community of Dunoon to generate an income and in the process, unearthing and developing raw artistic talent in the area.

Founded in 2009 by Adriaan van der Westhuizen and Clinton Booyse, Green Hart is proof that one or two individuals can make a difference in South Africa.

Their focus is on teaching the community members to use their hands and creativity to create paintings, mosaic pots and art, beaded cloths and African-inspired ornaments.

To date, this initiative has been a huge success by identifying future craft artists, as well as providing them with a regular creative platform upon which to express themselves. These works are then showcased for sale weekly at Sunday Island Market - Cape Town’s first indoor lifestyle market held at Northgate Island which is situated on the N1 Highway, next to Ysterplaat Airforce Base and alongside the M5 highway.

“We have been amazed at the natural artistic talent we have seen from people with absolutely no formal training. Who knows, maybe the next great designer is sitting right under our noses.

“We also firmly believe that organisations such as ours can play a small, but significant part in creating a sustainable South Africa,” says founder, Adriaan van der Westhuizen. To date, Green Hart has trained several individuals and aims to increase this number significantly in 2010.
